It kind of feels like all of life’s responsibilities rest on your shoulder when you’re a mom, right? We’re in charge of carpool, helping with homework, bathing, laundry, cleaning, among other responsibilities. Sometimes it feels almost impossible to also have to plan healthy meals when you’re a busy mom.
But, I am living proof that it can be done.
I am a dance mom, we practically live at Studio 203 Dance Center in Killeen, Texas. I must add that in my opinion, it is also one of the best dance studios in the area. They are family oriented and practice all the safety precautions to keep the kids safe amidst Covid 19.
Our week gets busy when this mom has been at work all day, the kids at school all day then you come home and the kids have homework and after school sports. With everything that is going on, we still have to eat, right?
However, having the time to cook a meal, serve that meal, and actually eat the meal before practice doesn’t always happen.
The best way to fix that problem is to do a little preparation. Yes, preparation is key to a less stressful week – no matter what topic we’re thinking about!
How to Plan Healthy Meals When You’re a Busy Mom
Find Healthy Recipe Ideas on Pinterest
Pinterest is my friend. I browse Pinterest daily in search of healthy crock pot recipes and quick meals all the time.
Write down a list of your family’s favorite foods or meal ideas, and then set aside a few minutes each week to search for new, interesting, or easy recipes that fit some of those favorites and check the healthy box.
Meal Prep: Prep Foods in Advance
We all know that processed foods aren’t the healthiest foods to eat. However, for most busy moms, grabbing something quick on the go often feels like the only way to feed those hungry kids as you rush between activities.
I am not a pro at this at all. But I knew I had to start paying attention to how much processed items we were eating as a family, and slowly but surely began to start meal prepping healthier options.
I didn’t get it right from day one. I tried chopping and cooking in bulk at the beginning of the week, and buying items in advance that I knew I wanted to include as part of my weekly prep.
Sunday is my day to plan and prep. I make the grocery list on what we will need for the week, order online, and then head out and pick it up when it is ready. I prep each crockpot meal in Zip Lock bags and then store in freezer. It is so easy to just get up in the morning dump the zip lock bag set the crock pot timer and then head onto work!
Once we come home, the kids are able to fix up a quick snack before we head to dance or other activities.
Easy, Healthy Family Recipe
One of my family’s favorite recipes is Slow Cooker Beef on Rice.
Cook time: 6 hours 5 minutes in the crockpot/slow cooker
What you’ll need:
2 pounds beef chunks
4 cups beef broth
1 onion (chopped)
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2-3 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 cup cold water
3 tablespoons corn starch
4-6 cups brown or white rice (for serving with dinner)
Add all ingredients (except the rice) to your slow cooker and cook on low for 6 hours.
Other Tips and Tricks to Prep Healthy Foods When You’re a Busy Mom
Another tip and trick is on Sunday, purchase five of the gallon of waters at your nearest grocery store they normally cost only one dollar. If you do not like water plain you can always cut up some fruit and put it into your water. This will help you with your gallon of water each day for the week.
Get some spinach in a bag, chicken strips, slices of fruit and you can prep your salad for the week. In Texas we have a store called H.E.B and it has healthy meals already prepped, which is great if you do not know how or if you don’t have time to do it yourself. Even being able to take advantage of a couple meals each week will help save time.
Being a busy mom does not mean that you have to eat out during the week or that you can’t eat healthy. With just a little time on your off day and planning you can have fun meal prepping. Include the kids and make it a family event; quality time teaching them how to make healthy choices in the kitchen.
